Another big climbing day
We had breakfast this morning right in the old town area of Jackson Hole. There's a square there that has arches made out of elk antlers at each corner. The ride went out of town along the National Elk Refuge - No elk but plenty of beautiful scenery. Today was all about the Tetons, I don't think there's a more stunning range of mountains in the world. We kept stopping at all the viewpoints, marveling at the sight of these rugged peaks.
The day was billed as a lesser but harder climb than yesterday, if that makes any sense. After the Teton pass, climbing up to the Continental Dived was pure agony on my tired legs. As you can see by the picture, we were at a higher elevation and in snow which made climbing even harder. At one point we had to be shuttled through a con
struction zone up near the top - the construction company put all the bikes (and riders) on a flat bed trailer (with no rails) and carried them (slowly) to the other side. The safety officer must have had the day off. Proceeding to the top we all stopped, took a picture of the sign (kind of an anti climax) and raced of down the hill towards Dubois. There was a pilot vehicle waiting to escort us through another construction zone a mile down the hill, so we had to hurry. With a late start and all the delays we didn't get into Dubois until 5:00, then it was off to dinner at this cowboy bar that was lined with elk and big horn sheep mounts as well as fish, guns, and all other Wyoming ty
pe paraphernalia. we had to clear out by 7:00 - That's when the band started and the square dancing began.

ReplyDeleteLeave it to you to think about the "safety officer's" whereabouts. Oh, and why didn't you stay for the square dancing? I'm sure you could have showed them a thing or two. Hang in there til rest day...it's coming soon! XO
ReplyDeleteRide all day and you don't say for the big dance. How do you breathe the air up their? Go Bud.
ReplyDeleteI expected this day to be rough following all of the climbing on the previous day. I continue to be impressed by your milestones. Congratulations on breaking 1,000 miles and getting through a couple days of hard climbs. I, for one, am glad you left before the square dancing!
ReplyDeleteWow, once again the photos are phenomenal. Simply beautiful. Friday will be here before you know it; a welcome break for your weary legs.
